Conditions for successful trapping:

Ultra high vacuum (pressure in the ion trap chamber is ~10^-10 torr)

According to Simion simulations, ions stay indefinitely trapped (collisions ignored) if:

Cone distribution of ions entering the trap is < 0.4 degrees

Ions entering the trap are less than 1 mm off axis.
